Blog Post #9: The Sexualization of Mainstream Society -- Is it a problem?

The topic of sexualization in mainstream society is referring to how much visible sex and how the topic of such is becoming much more prevalent. For example the increase in pornography, the way celebrities and other socialites are dressing and being viewed, as well as the increased amount if sexualization going on a day to day basis. I feel that it is a problem because its introducing the narrow idea of feminine beauty, be it through mainstream media, or marketing exploits. It puts a lot of pressure on today’s generation to look like “supermodels”, which has been proven to lead to eating disorders as well as mental disorders such as depression. Finally I feel it is a problem because its leading in a lot of cases to women not being treated fairly on a sexual level because of the way they dress, its become a lot more prevalent that women are being sexually exploited.

  1. I agree! It is hard to follow your own path in society when media is veering you into the wrong direction. The picture you posted of Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus now is a great example of sexualization in society. It is very difficult for young girls to follow in their role models footsteps when they act like this.

  2. I think it is awesome that you have included the picture. It makes this issue much more real. Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus) is a role model for hundreds of thousands of kids. It is scary that so many of our future generations look up to someone who is very provocative. If they see her doing such things that us older generations know as "bad" they will think it is okay. This can have so many negative effects on their growth and development and it needs to be fixed before the minds and morals of our future generations become distorted.

  3. I agree with all of your points 100%, I feel that the sexualization effects mainly young girls since they are growing up with a flawed idea of how they should look and act. The sexualization of society definitely pushes society's morals in the wrong direction and will lead to issues like women being treated poorly, depression, and eating disorders.

  4. Media has had a colossal effect on the image of girls and even young guys. It has put an ideal image of "beautiful" out there that kids feel they must achieve. It is also the reason for a lot of teen pregnancies and even rape.

  5. Sexualisation has always been present in society, I do not understand why this has become such a huge issue.
