blog #10 North Korea: What would you do if you were President Obama?

I feel that president Obama should restrain from attacking or using any type of force against North Korea at this point. If he wishes to solve this issue with any hope of peace in the future, he will have to continue to try and negotiate especially as North Korea has made multiple threats in the past and is yet to follow through on most of them. By taking a diplomatic in solving this issue it will also help to maintain his image on the world stage of working towards peace and resolution without violence. Furthermore, if the issue was to escalate to the point where U.S citizens were at a high risk, then I feel it would be time to act with more force, as it would be viewed as an act of self-defense. I feel that if he is able to solve the conflict this way then most importantly causalities will be limited, and it will leave a chance in the future for peace between both nations.

  1. You make good points on the cons side of not taking action. Although I do not agree with your statement on the US trying to keep peace with the world. They take the initiative to move into nations such as Iraq and Afghanistan and kill citizens. Now they have done a lot of good in the middle eastern nations, but keeping peace without violence is not at the top of their priorities list.

  2. I largely agree with what you have indicated. Really the only significant difference I feel is needed would be for the US to exert diplomatic pressure on North Korea's friend and ally, China, to use their influence in brining North Korea back in line.

  3. I personally feel that Barack Obama should pressure China into warning North Korea about the negative effects that starting a war would cause, since China is North Korea's strongest ally. But I definitely agree with you in that the United States should stay away from unnecessary violence.

  4. I agree that he should restrain until he is absolutely positive of what is going on with everything. Until then, only more conflict will arise if he acts on these threats.

  5. Agreed, negotiations are more effective than violence. Rational decisions must be made to prevent another world war.
